Slovak high school students explored the world of Big Science at European XFEL

On October 13 and 14, Slovak high school students participated in the Xcool Lab educational program, which offered them a unique opportunity to explore the world of modern scientific research, experience the work of scientists firsthand, and get a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most significant research facilities—the European XFEL in Schenefeld, Germany, near Hamburg.

During the two-day program, participants engaged in practical exercises in biology and physics, which allowed them to deepen their theoretical knowledge while discovering how scientific insights are gained through experimentation. The Xcool Lab program focuses on experiential learning, bridging scientific concepts with modern research methods and technologies used in science.

The program also included a visit to the research stations and facilities at the various sites. European XFEL utilizes exceptionally intense X-ray flashes to investigate processes at the atomic and molecular level, thereby opening up new possibilities in physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as in the field of materials research.

The two-day program culminated in lectures by leading experts and a discussion with Slovak scientists working directly at the European XFEL. Students had the opportunity to learn more about current scientific issues, the day-to-day work of researchers, and prospects for further study and future professional careers in science. Meeting the Slovak scientists in person also demonstrated to them that Slovak experts are indeed part of top-tier international research teams.

The event was a success, providing students with a wealth of new knowledge, experience, and inspiration. They broadened their horizons, discovered new applications for biology and physics, and gained a clearer understanding of how “big science” functions—from the preparation of experiments and the use of sophisticated technology to collaboration within international scientific teams.

The participation of Slovak high school students in the Xcool Lab program was made possible through the support of European XFEL and the National Contact Point for European XFEL and other European Research Infrastructures (NCPXFEL) at UPJŠ in Košice, both of which helped organize this educational initiative. Special thanks for the excellent organization go to NCP Secretary Jaroslava Szűcsová (NCPXFEL, UPJŠ in Košice) and Jana Pivoňková (NCPXFEL, European XFEL GmbH), whose efforts ensured the event’s success. Such initiatives bring cutting-edge research closer to young people, foster their interest in the natural sciences, and motivate them to explore the opportunities that a scientific career can offer.

NCPXFEL is established as a project supported by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic.
